The Dallas Cowboys are assessing their roster as they prepare for the 2026 season, particularly in the safety position, where significant changes have occurred. Under new defensive coordinator Christian Parker, the Cowboys aim to improve upon a defense that was rated as the worst in the NFL last season, allowing 511 points.

The safety group has seen a major overhaul, with only Malik Hooker and Markquese Bell returning from last year. The team made headlines by signing Jalen Thompson, their most expensive free agent in over a decade, and also added PJ Locke, who has previous experience with Parker.

Additionally, the Cowboys selected Caleb Downs with the No. 11 pick in the draft, further indicating their commitment to strengthening the safety position.

Markquese Bell's status has been under scrutiny, especially after he was a healthy scratch during a recent preseason game against the Cardinals. This decision aligns with the Cowboys' practice of resting veterans who are expected to make the final roster to prevent injuries.

Despite concerns about his position due to the team's heavy investment in the safety room and his arrest in April for possession of a controlled substance and marijuana, Bell remains a valued member of the team.

Bell, who joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent from Florida A&M in 2022, has been praised for his versatility, stepping into a linebacker role last season when needed. His performance in training camp has been noted positively, with speculation that the Cowboys may retain five safeties on their roster.

Calvin Watkins from the Dallas Morning News included Bell in his roster projections, highlighting his physical play and the flexibility of other safeties like Downs and Locke.

As the Cowboys finalize their roster decisions, Bell's future with the team appears uncertain, but his contributions and adaptability may play a crucial role in the team's plans moving forward.
