The Dallas Cowboys are optimistic about their 2026 NFL draft picks, particularly regarding rookie linebacker Jaishawn Barham. Early assessments suggest that the Cowboys may have secured one of the best defensive players in the draft, alongside a potential foundational middle linebacker.

Barham, who stands 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 240 pounds, entered the league with some uncertainty about his ideal position. He has experience as both an edge rusher and an off-ball linebacker, leading to differing opinions on where he would excel in the NFL.

However, the Cowboys have clearly designated him as an off-ball player, drawing comparisons to Zack Baun, a player with a similar skill set.

Defensive coordinator Christian Parker has utilized Barham effectively during preseason games, positioning him strategically to disrupt opposing run games. Will McClay, a key figure in the Cowboys' management, praised Barham’s maturity and physicality, stating, "Barham is a grown man from a standpoint of, mentally, he's shown that he can handle different things that we're doing with him. He's very physical, very intentional, and dialed in."

Despite a groin injury that limited his participation in training camp, Barham showcased his abilities in preseason games, wearing the green dot and demonstrating strong performance. He expressed confidence in his readiness, saying, "I’m ready right now. We can play right now, for real."

While it may be challenging for Barham to secure a starting position immediately due to his missed time, expectations are that he could break into the starting lineup by midseason. His physical presence and impressive preseason performance suggest he may soon become a key player for the Cowboys.

Further details regarding Barham's role and the team's plans for the upcoming season are not yet clear.
