Malik Davis will miss the Cowboys’ season after suffering a hip injury during Friday’s practice at The Star in Frisco. He was taken from the field by cart and required surgery later that evening, according to the Dallas Cowboys.
The injury occurred during a non-contact workout that was described as slightly more than a walk-through. Davis had been projected to serve as the No. 2 running back behind Javonte Williams after winning a close competition during August.
The Cowboys added Emari Demercado as their third running back for depth and special-teams assistance. With Davis unavailable, the team could also use Israel Abanikanda, who is on the practice squad, either by elevating him for the game or placing him on the active roster. Davis had been expected to have a role in the offensive plan for the game against the Giants.
Davis backed up Williams last season and recorded 252 rushing yards and two touchdowns. He joined the Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in 2022, played in 12 games as a rookie and rushed for 161 yards. He spent the following two seasons on the practice squad before returning during last year’s training camp and making the roster.
He rushed for 103 yards last season, which was his only 100-yard performance.
