Florida State coach Mike Norvell said the Seminoles are preparing for Saturday’s game at No. 10 Alabama in Tuscaloosa after SMU handed them a disappointing loss. Florida State is 1-1, but Norvell said the result did not change his belief in what the team can accomplish. He said quarterback Ashton Daniels had a strong week, including his practice habits and focus on controllable areas.
Michael Alford was fired as athletic director. Norvell credited Alford and his wife, Laura, for their contributions to the program. Bruce Warwick is serving as interim athletic director, and Norvell called him an experienced professional who should handle the role well. Players had Monday off, and Norvell planned to address the leadership change with them Tuesday.
Freshmen Izayia Williams and Daylen Green will miss the rest of the season at linebacker. Veteran Blake Nichelson is expected back at some point this year, though his absence will last an extended period. Norvell said those personnel losses may open roles on defense and special teams.
Norvell described Alabama’s defense as quick and explosive, with a bigger front than last season. Florida State will need balanced offense, strong individual performances and large gains, he said. Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell also poses a running threat outside the pocket. Norvell said the Seminoles will use lessons from the SMU game in the Alabama matchup.
