The Houston Texans have elevated George Odum from their practice squad for their Week 2 game against the Cincinnati Bengals, giving the veteran safety another opportunity to play before the team must make a longer-term decision on his roster status.
This is Odum’s second practice squad elevation. He can be called up one more time, after which Houston would need to add him to its 53-man roster or choose another option. The Texans are scheduled to face the Indianapolis Colts in Week 3, which could provide the setting for his final available elevation.
Odum entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent and is in his ninth season. He has received First Team All-Pro recognition with the Colts and Second Team All-Pro honors with the San Francisco 49ers. Across 109 games, he has started 12 and recorded 209 tackles, four forced fumbles, three interceptions and two fumble recoveries.
His role with Houston is expected to center on special teams. Odum recorded a tackle against the Buffalo Bills and played 71% of Houston’s special teams snaps in the team’s 36-31 Week 1 loss. Pro Football Focus ranked him 26th among 29 Texans special teams players for that game, based on its overall grade.
