The Houston Texans and quarterback C.J. Stroud have agreed to pause negotiations on a contract extension until after the 2026 season, according to a report published Sept. 12 by sports.yahoo.com.
The sides had been trying to reach an agreement before the regular season began, but they chose to delay further work on a long-term contract. Stroud remains under contract through the 2027 season because of the Texans’ fifth-year option.
The decision does not settle questions about Stroud’s future with Houston beyond that contract term. It does indicate that the team and quarterback remain interested in reaching a longer agreement, according to the report.
Stroud’s potential contract value has been discussed in a range of figures during the offseason. One reported offer was between $50 million and $55 million, while another figure mentioned was about $70 million.
Garret Williams of Houston Stressans said the pause did not necessarily indicate a problem between the sides and described the process as amicable. Williams also said both outcomes had advantages and disadvantages, with the 2026 season now positioned to influence the eventual negotiations.
