The State Fair of Texas opens its gates on Sept. 25 at Fair Park in Dallas, running through Oct. 18. As the nation's longest-running fair, it has operated since 1886 to promote agriculture and community engagement.
The event features livestock shows, an auto show, a carnival midway, and live music. All concerts are included with general admission. Opening day performances include country artist Clint Black. Other scheduled acts are the Toadies, Bowling for Soup, Kansas, Queensrÿche, Paul Wall, Deep Blue Something, Tripping Daisy, Gym Class Heroes, and 3OH!3.
The fairgrounds also host college football games. The State Fair Classic between Grambling State and Prairie View A&M is set for Sept. 26. The Allstate Red River Rivalry between Texas and Oklahoma takes place on Oct. 10. Both games require separate tickets that include fair admission.
McKinney Oktoberfest begins the same day in downtown McKinney. The three-day festival offers German music, food, and drinks. Activities include stein-holding and bratwurst-eating contests, a beard and mustache competition, and children's programs.
The event features its 17th annual weenie dog races, with more than 70 dachshunds and other breeds competing. A VIP biergarten is available for $44 to $55 through Eventbrite. General admission is free.
Scarborough's Hollow opens Sept. 26 at the Scarborough Renaissance Festival grounds in Waxahachie. The fall fantasy festival runs through Oct. 31 and includes artisan shopping, live entertainment, and interactive experiences.
