University of Houston football player Carmello Brooks appeared in court Monday while facing two criminal charges, including one alleging he assaulted a pregnant person. Nariah Harley, the woman involved in that case, asked the judge to dismiss the charge and said she does not view herself as a victim.
Harley told the court that the incident started with an argument inside Brooks’ apartment last week. She said Brooks repeatedly told her to leave, then lifted her and placed her outside after she refused. Court records indicate that UH police responded to the apartment.
Harley also said Brooks contacted law enforcement, telling the court he called 911 because she would not leave the apartment. She said Brooks is the father of her baby and asked that the charges be dropped so both could continue with their lives.
Brooks’ attorney, Brent Wasserstein, said prosecutors are expected to examine the emergency call and police body-camera recordings from the response. He said he believes the footage will support Brooks’ account after it is reviewed.
The second case involves an August incident in northwest Harris County. Brooks is accused of damaging a door handle after a dispute involving another woman and her sister, and prosecutors filed a criminal mischief charge in that matter. Family members said Brooks and those women grew up together in Killeen and attended high school together.
