The Cowboys are preparing for a range of field conditions before their Sunday game against the Ravens at Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. The NFL has said the matchup will proceed as scheduled despite questions about the playing surface.
Dallas defensive tackle Kenny Clark said he is focused on playing rather than publicly criticizing the field. Clark previously played in São Paulo with the Green Bay Packers, where he said the surface became soft and difficult to navigate during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
That earlier game included a cleat adjustment by Eagles running back Saquon Barkley to improve traction. Clark used footwear with seven studs during the contest and said he is uncertain how the Rio field will appear when the Cowboys arrive.
The NFL has been checking the Maracanã surface throughout the month. Nick Pappas, the league’s field director, told The Dallas Morning News that officials have made repeated visits and are closely monitoring conditions.
The Cowboys are scheduled to see the field for the first time Saturday. Coach Brian Schottenheimer said the team will bring several cleat types, while players will be allowed to choose based on how each option feels. He said the team will have additional shoes available if conditions require a change.
