Southern Methodist University has announced the appointment of Derek Gossler as its new Senior Associate Athletic Director for Revenue Generation. This move is part of the university's strategy to improve its competitiveness in the Atlantic Coast Conference by enhancing revenue generation, an essential aspect of contemporary college athletics.
Gossler comes to SMU with more than 15 years of expertise in fundraising, ticket sales, and commercial strategies. He previously held the position of Senior Associate Athletic Director for Development and Chief Revenue Officer at the University of Wyoming, where he made significant strides in increasing cash and pledges through the Cowboy Joe Club, as well as achieving record ticket and premium seating revenue.
Before his tenure at Wyoming, Gossler contributed to the U.S. Air Force Academy, where he played a key role in achieving five consecutive years of record fundraising. His background also includes impactful work at Arizona State University, where he was part of a major fundraising campaign that raised $86 million and helped launch the men's hockey program through substantial donor support.
Gossler's diverse experience across various athletic departments equips him to meet SMU's needs as it competes in a major market. He intends to enhance revenue through innovative approaches and strengthen ties with fans, supporters, and corporate partners. The hiring of Gossler reflects SMU's commitment to advancing its athletic programs nationally, especially as the Mustangs join the ACC.
Further details regarding his plans for revenue generation at SMU have not yet been revealed.
