BJ Edwards, who played for the SMU Mustangs, has decided to transfer to the Oklahoma Sooners. This move comes as he is granted an extra season of eligibility due to a five-for-five temporary injunction affecting the 2022 recruiting class.
Edwards previously spent three seasons at SMU in Dallas, having initially committed to the University of Tennessee out of high school. After playing just 14 games at Tennessee, he transferred to SMU through the NCAA transfer portal. At SMU, he played under two different head coaches, Rob Lanier and Andy Enfield, and remained a key player despite coaching changes.
His standout season occurred last year, where he participated in 28 games while managing injuries toward the end of the season. Edwards averaged 12.7 points per game, with a shooting percentage of 47.4. Additionally, he contributed 5.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game, and his defensive skills earned him All-Conference defensive team recognition in the ACC, averaging 2.3 steals per game in his final season.
Although SMU sought to keep him, Edwards opted to play for head coach Porter Moser at Oklahoma. The Sooners are aiming to enhance their team after concluding the last season with a 21-16 record and a 7-11 performance in SEC play, missing out on the NCAA Tournament. Edwards’ addition is anticipated to strengthen the team's competitiveness for the upcoming season.
